Differential

When a vehicle turns a corner, the inside wheels cover a shorter distance than those on the outside. To limit stresses and other wear in the drive train, the differential compensates for this difference. Since the rear wheels describe an arc different from the front wheels, an all-wheel-drive quattro® also has a mechanical Torsen® differential or a Haldex® clutch to compensate for the difference in rotational speeds.
