All Audi models are extensively tested to achieve optimum safety prior to a car's availability in the market. First, virtual crash testing takes places via computer simulations. The following are tuned:
* Stiffness of passenger compartment
* Resulting acceleration curves
* Occupant protection systems
Next, the Vehicle Safety Department conducts a whole series of crash tests – up to 30 different types, including frontal, side, rear-end and offset impacts and rollovers.
The results of all these crash tests form the basis of the continuous development process to improve passive safety, which involves engineers and scientists as well as experts in accident medicine and accident research.
